In these difficult times we still offer some private lessons but in a very different manner. We have a large studio which is split into two so there still can be lessons without the problems created by computer lessons but it is still are in a safe environment. We have flute students, piano, clarinet and saxes. I particularly like my older students, beginners  more of the senior age group. All learn well but in a very  different way. The aim is to make each pupil create their own performances. We are not doing exams at the moment but the kids are improving at an incredible rate. It is using computer technology in a new way.

Most kids have access to an iPhone and that is the key to what they use. iphones have amazing apps which we use. The main ones we use are

Tempo Slow Mo

Skype

Voice Memos

iMovie

PlayScore

insTuner

plus youtube

I have been delighted with what everyone is doing. All they have to work with is their part (often a popular song I would never have imagined teaching) plus a backing track I make for them. They produce their own performances using a rubric to check their performance quality and practice with their backing. Any problem sections they record on Skype and send to me. They often just use the voice memo app to play along with the backing I have made for them, not good quality but it still works. Better would be Garage Band but that takes more skill than most kids have.  They add visuals they have chosen using imovie using photos or video clips. and the results have just kept improving. I stand back with fingers crossed letting them make their own  creations, I don’t want to interfere too much…. and it is working. Often when the piece is finished the pupil will come to me to say she did not like a certain part of what she has done, so we do it again. They are all on a private youtube channel of their own. A new way of performing in the pandemic
